Backtesting your strategy
Run a strategy over historical candles — a quick pass while building, or a deep run across a long date range.

A backtest runs your strategy over historical candles and reports how it would have behaved. Spera has two flavors.
Quick backtest
The fast pass you run while building, from the Builder's bottom panel. It executes over the candles currently loaded on the chart and returns an equity curve plus metrics in seconds — tight enough to iterate on.
Tip
Use quick backtests as your edit-test loop: change a node, re-run, read the result, repeat.
Deep backtest
When you want to evaluate across a long history, run a deep backtest over an explicit date range. It runs as a job (so a long window doesn't block the UI) and reports progress as it goes. Use it to confirm an idea holds across different market regimes, not just the slice on your chart.
Same engine, honest results
Both flavors run the same execution engine that powers paper trading — the one that computes your strategy candle-by-candle. A backtest result and a paper run on the same data agree exactly. That's the point: the number you iterate on is the number you'll get.
The account behind the run
Backtest settings in the Builder's bottom panel set the account a run trades in: starting balance, fees and slippage, margin, sizing, and an optional risk policy.
- Leverage is judged like a Binance futures account. A leveraged position can be liquidated, and futures positions pay or receive funding at every settlement they hold through. Neither is optional. See margin, liquidation, and funding.
- A risk policy adds rails you choose: exposure caps, drawdown stops, a daily loss limit, and more. See risk policy.
- Several strategies can share one account. A portfolio backtests them together as one book.
Heads up
A great curve on one period and one pair is not an edge. Vary the date range and the pair before you trust it. Overfitting to one slice is the most common way to fool yourself.
